AI driven coaching, generative AI assistants and online coaching platforms are fuelling demand for Coaching skills in L&D. Are we set to see a boom in coaching skills and qualifications?

As a recruiter with 22 years of experience in the Learning and Talent Development (L&D) sector, we have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of coaching.

We have annecdotally noticed an increase in the demand for coaching skills in L&D job descriptions and requirements.  We have also seen an increase in the number of L&D professionals acquiring Coaching Qualifications (badges) for career development purposes and even potentially to establish a future career as an Independent Coach.

When considering this, It is hard not to contemplate the impact of the integration of AI and online platforms in coaching and it is likely that this is not just a trend—it is potentially an accelerator for coaching that is here here to stay.

The landscape of coaching in L&D seems to be evolving rapidly, driven by advancements in artificial intelligence and the increasing demand for flexible, personalised learning solutions. According to Market Research Future, the online coaching market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 8% from 2021 to 2027, reflecting a significant shift towards digital and AI-powered coaching platforms​. The 2024 Linkedin Workplace survey HERE states that 90% of companies are concerned about employee retention. Career Development is the Number 1 reason for learning as internal mobility is a major focus and 47% of companies are investing in career mentoring and coaching to boost retention.

Scalability: AI-driven  or supported platforms can handle many users simultaneously, making coaching accessible to a broader audience without compromising on quality. This scalability is particularly beneficial for organisations looking to implement large-scale coaching programs.

Cost-Effectiveness: Online coaching reduces overhead costs associated with traditional face-to-face sessions. This cost efficiency allows organisations to allocate resources more effectively and offer coaching to more employees.

Qualifications for Coaches in L&D

AI can of course assist in scaling, analysing and making coaching more accessible and cost effective, however you of course still need Human coaches and almost certainly more of them. The International Coaching Federation (ICF) reported a 54% increase in qualified coaches in their Global Study 2023.
